THE DICHOTOMIZED GOD - Intro 3

INTRO 3

THE BRIDGE BETWEEN GRACE AND OBEDIENCE:

LIVING IN DIVINE BALANCE

Overcoming the False Dilemma

The Christian world is often split into two extreme camps:

1.  The Extreme Grace Camp: "We are free to do anything because we are already forgiven."

2.  The Extreme Obedience Camp: "Salvation must be earned through good deeds."

The Bible offers a radical third way:

a. Responsible Grace (Romans 6:1-14)

Myths Destroyed:

-   "Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?" (verse 1)

Biblical Truth:

1.  Grace is not a license to sin (verse 2)

    -   Analogy: A doctor's forgiveness is not a reason to keep harming your body.

2.  Baptism as a sign of death to sin (verses 3-4)

    -   Not merely a ritual, but a declaration of war against the old way of life.

3.  Grace provides the power for a new life (verse 14)

    -   It doesn't just forgive, it transforms (Titus 2:11-12).

Practice:

-   When you fall into sin:

    1.  Remember forgiveness (1 John 1:9).

    2.  Rise again to live a new life (Romans 6:4).

    3.  Use the tools of grace (prayer, the Word, community).

b. Obedience Rooted in Love (James 2:14-26)

Brief Explanation:
- False Faith is an intellectual acknowledgment of God's truth (even demons believe this), but it is not accompanied by surrender, obedience, and love—the fruits of a living relationship with Christ. This type of faith is dead and does not save.
- Genuine Faith is a living and active trust that naturally results in deeds and obedience as its evidence. Faith and works work together; deeds are the completion and proof of a living faith.

Key Points:

-   It is not works that save, but saving faith will inevitably bear fruit.

-   Obedience is a response, not a requirement (Ephesians 2:8-10).

-   The test of faith: How we treat the vulnerable (vv.14-17).

c. Meaningful Sacraments (Romans 6:3-7; Colossians 2:11-12)

The Meaning of Baptism:

1.  Not Merely:

    -   A church tradition.

    -   An administrative requirement for salvation.

2.  But Rather:

    -   Union with Christ's death/resurrection.

    -   A declaration of switching kingdoms (from sin to God).

Contemporary Analogy:

-   Like an organ transplant – receiving a new spiritual DNA.

-   Like a declaration of independence – breaking ties with the tyranny of sin.

Practical Daily Living:

1.  In the Family:

    -   Grace: Accepting a child who fails.

    -   Obedience: Setting healthy boundaries.

2.  In the Workplace:

    -   Grace: Forgiving a coworker's mistake.

    -   Obedience: Maintaining professional integrity.

3.  Personally:

    -   Grace: Accepting your imperfect self.

    -   Obedience: Spiritual disciplines (prayer, fasting, etc.).

Warnings:

-   Do not turn grace into "cheap religion" (Jude 1:4).

-   Do not turn obedience into "heavy religion" (Matthew 23:4).

> "Grace is the root, obedience is the fruit. Never reverse them."

> - Charles Spurgeon

Reflection Questions:

1.  In what area of my life am I prone to abuse grace?

2.  In what part have I unknowingly become trapped in legalism?

3.  How does my baptism influence my daily life?

Connector:

This balance must be realized in the practice of renewing the mind, which we will discuss next...
