THE DICHOTOMIZED GOD - Intro
INTRODUCTION: RESTORING THE ADAMIC MINDSET - THE BRIDGE BETWEEN GRACE AND OBEDIENCE
The Divisive Dichotomy
Since the fall of humanity in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3), a fundamental distortion has occurred in how we perceive God. Sin not only damaged our vertical relationship with God but also scrambled our understanding of the two main pillars of spiritual life:
1. Grace (God's unconditional favor)
2. Law (God's standard of holiness)
As a result of this distortion, the body of Christ has been split into two extreme camps:
The Grace Camp (Relational):
- Focus: "God is love" (1 John 4:8)
- Risks:
- Neglecting God's holiness (1 Peter 1:16)
- Antinomianism (considering the Law irrelevant)
- Example: Churches that refuse to teach repentance
The Law Camp (Legalism):
- Focus: "Be holy, because I am holy" (Leviticus 11:44)
- Risks:
- Formalism without heart (Isaiah 29:13)
- Obedience as a condition for salvation
- Example: The Pharisees in Jesus' time
The Root Problem: A Broken Mindset
This problem originates from a paradigm shift after the fall:
- Before sin: Adam knew God in intimacy (Genesis 3:8a) → obedience flowed naturally, like a child obeying a beloved father.
- After sin:
- The relationship became transactional (humans felt the need to "pay" for sin).
- Two wrong responses emerged:
1. Legalism: Cain offering the fruit of the soil (Genesis 4:3) → striving to gain acceptance through effort.
2. Antinomianism: The Corinthians misusing their freedom (1 Corinthians 6:12) → neglecting holiness.
The Biblical Solution: Returning to the Edenic Mindset
The Bible's answer to this dichotomy is the restoration of Adam's pre-fall mindset—when relationship and obedience were still organically united. This is realized in:
1. The Model of Christ:
- "The Son can do nothing by himself" (John 5:19)
- His obedience flowed from communion with the Father (John 15:10)
2. The Pattern of New Life:
- Baptism as union with Christ's death/resurrection (Romans 6:4)
- Faith that produces works (James 2:26)
3. The Transformation of the Mind:
- "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2)
- Putting on the new self (Colossians 3:10)
Why is This Relevant Today?
1. Spirituality Crisis:
- Barna Survey (2023): 68% of young Christians admit confusion between "God's love" and "demands for holiness."
2. Church Polarization:
- The "Grace" vs. "Obedience" camps often blame each other.
- Loss of a holistic biblical vision.
3. An Urgent Need:
- The postmodern world needs a Christian witness that is:
- Full of love and integrity.
- Both inviting and sanctifying.
> "In Christ, we find the middle way: a love that sanctifies and a holiness that loves."
