THE DICHOTOMIZED GOD - Intro 4
INTRO 4
RESTORING THE EDEN MINDSET:
EVERYDAY TRANSFORMATION PRACTICES
1. Renewing the Mind Through Holistic Scripture (Romans 12:2)
The Danger of a Partial Approach:
- Only Relational: The Bible becomes an "inspirational book" without life change.
- Only Legalistic: The Bible becomes a "list of rules" without intimate relationship.
Transformational Reading Method:
1. Ask 3 Essential Questions:
- What does this text reveal about God's character?
- What does this text show about the human condition?
- How does this truth call me to change?
2. Practical Example:
- When reading Psalm 23:
- God's Character: A Shepherd who provides (verse 1).
- Human Condition: Vulnerable sheep in need of a leader (verse 4).
- Application: Learn to depend completely like a sheep.
3. Helpful Tools:
- The SOAP method (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer).
- Spiritual journaling to track growth.
2. Community that Balances Love and Holiness
Markers of a Healthy Church:
- Teaches Grace that Sanctifies (Titus 2:11-12).
- Life-Giving Practices:
- Church discipline with a spirit of restoration (Galatians 6:1).
- Communion as a celebration of grace and accountability.
Building Transformational Friendships:
- Find 2-3 people for:
- Accountability (James 5:16).
- In-depth Bible study.
- Serving together.
3. Spiritual Discipline in Love (Galatians 5:6)
Micro-Obedience Exercises:
1. Forgiving:
- Start with small hurts (e.g., a hurtful comment).
- Prayer: "Lord, help me see them as You see them."
2. Honesty:
- In everyday conversations.
- When filing taxes/expense reports.
3. Loving Enemies:
- Pray for them for 1 minute/day.
- Perform 1 act of kindness with no strings attached.
The Role of the Holy Spirit:
- Not self-effort, but:
- "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth" (1 Cor 3:6).
- Use the means of grace:
- Contemplative prayer.
- Social media fasting.
- Worship.
30-Day Challenge:
- Choose 1 area for mind transformation:
- E.g., Change the mindset from "I must be perfect" to "I am loved in the process."
- Keep a daily progress log.
> "The renewal of the mind is not a one-time project but a lifelong journey in the light of grace."
> — Dallas Willard
Self-Evaluation Questions:
1. How has my Bible reading habit tended to be legalistic or antinomian?
2. Does my circle of friends encourage me toward a love-holiness balance?
3. What "micro" obedience can I start this week?
Next Step:
This restoration reaches its peak when we realize that in Christ, we have become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). Let's explore the full implications of this truth...
